Hello! It’s so nice to meet you.

I’m Courtney, a hobby potter and maker from southern Kentucky. I love crafting beautiful things, but between my cats and my pottery studio, I like to joke that everything I do has a little bit of cat hair and a little bit of clay in it — thus the name.

I have three cats (Pip, Walt, and Blue) and two dogs (Rosa and Heidi). Pip is my studio supurrvisor, Walt is the studio sweetheart, and Blue sneaks in at night to steal my pottery tools one by one. Rosa and Heidi just don’t understand why I’m allowed to get covered in mud but they’re not.

My studio is currently in the basement of my home, and I’m often joined by my sister-in-law, Kaity; she’s the reason I got into pottery in the first place. She invited me to a slab-built mug workshop, and I thought, sure, why not? I haven’t stopped making pottery ever since, and it has been the catalyst for me to lean more fully into my creative side.

In my studio, I primarily use mid-fire clays and glazes from KY Mudworks. I love that their products are both local and high-quality. I use a Shimpo VL-Whisper wheel and a Gare kiln I inherited from my Aunt Betty, who had a paint-your-own pottery studio way back before those were cool.

I call Cat Hair + Clay a hobby studio because #1 I don’t make pottery full-time or support my family off of it and #2 I wanted to create the space to pursue my other creative hobbies. I love to cross-stitch, embroider, crochet, weave, and paint watercolors when I’m not making pottery.

Carving out time to pursue arts and crafts is important both as a source of joy and for my mental health. One of my new favorite things is helping others find the time and space to do the same for themselves. I’m so glad you stopped by!
